Eyyyy. We’re back. So much has happened since last time. I am a student again (in MA Film Theory and Practice) and I missed last week’s episode so we’re gonna have to watch two in one. Also I dunno if I mentioned this in my review (I guess I could read it but I GOTTA CATCH UP ON TWO EPISODES), but it got pointed out on several fan discussions that the last episode had no speaking white human characters, which I didn’t realise!
After a review (again) of the last season finale, we begin the episode ‘Far From Home‘, which is odd because the last episode was a ‘Part 1’. I had to doublecheck that Netflix wasn’t missing an entire episode …

Discovery pelts into the 32nd century and towards a broken planetoid. The ship is unresponsive and failing as it crashes through rocks (and somehow survives) before crashing towards the planetoid. After a good old scene of people being thrown around a lot, the ship crash lands.
Cue title sequence which okay it’s growing on me like what do you want. I’m allowed growth.
Everyone applauds Detmer like she just landed a passenger plane as she seems weirdly off from the crash. Which I mean. Concussion will do that, like why isn’t anyone immediately applying first aid, concussion ain’t a small issue.
Saru tells everyone to fix the ship before they go exploring – which I guess makes sense but also maybe some people should go scouting, just to secure the area? Like that’s 101 survival. Tilly confirms to Saru that there is life, allowing them to make the same conclusion they won that Michael did. Georgiou turns up with bits of Leeland brain on her boots which is … lovely.
Staments wakes up in a shouty sickbay in a lovely scene as Culbert treats him. Meanwhile Detmer still seems off even though she has no concussion. Mary Wiseman does a amazing job portraying the shell shocked but competent Tilly as she explains how much she can discern about the planet they are on but also how much it makes no sense (due to the advancements and the Burn). Saru maintains they shouldn’t reveal they are from the past to the locals, but I am not sure how he intends to do this easily considering it is extremely easy to tell someone doesn’t know about hundreds of years of development.
As we see Leeland’s … remains be scooped up in the background, Reno and Staments exchange delicious bants. Saru and Tilly prepare to go out on an away team. Tilly and Saru have a cute dialogue about the newness of being in the future, her feelings and her importance. This was what I felt was odd about Burnham in the last episode, how quick she adapted, so it’s nice to get the other side.
Saru and Tilly follow a figure and are teleported to a tavern, in which are a few individuals. They aim weapons to them until Tilly uses her literal adorableness to get them to stand down because she is literally the best. They agree to help each other. Cal fixes their equipment for them while Tilly’s excitement and Saru’s misbelief that the Federation must still exist start to belay their past. Zara, the Courier the locals fear, arrives soon after. Figuring out both that Saru and Tilly are from the past and that Cal helped them, he shoots Cal with a weapon that slowly kills him and threatens Saru and Tilly.
Georgou arrives at the tavern and manoeuvres into a position to take out the enemies. Saru lets the survivor of the tavern decide Zara’s fate, who is forced to leave into the icy planet.
They get back to the ship, which with Staments help has been repaired (although I get tired of the character flaw where people in command who should know better keep putting themselves at risk when they’re not their 100% when they can easily command someone else to who won’t like start bleeding out midway through an important task). Detmer is still acting weirdly and SOMEONE should be NOTICING and relieving her of duty, this is not someone fit to be at the helm. The ship fails to break through the ice until a ship appears and tractors it out. Burnham hails them, having arrived here a year ago.
