So lets jump forward to 2014. Despite there being more than 10 years where I have had little to nothing to do with the franchise, I still hold it very close to heart. It was and will be my favourite anime and indeed, cartoon (probably the only other cartoon I can use to equate to my childhood would be the Tom & Jerry franchise). So I decided, why not rewatch them, from the beginning. Very quickly after, I decided on a better idea. Why start with DBZ? Why not go right to the beginning, and watch Dragon Ball. I do believe Dragon Ball was broadcast in the UK, but it was before my time, so I never watched it and indeed, wasn’t aware of it until at least some time through DBZ (or even after, this was still relative early days for the Internet and resources like Wikipedia simply weren’t around). And so I had decided to rewatch Dragon Ball, and have been for like a week now. So far I am on episode 36 of Dragon Ball – Major Metallitron, part way through the Red Ribbon Army Saga. I decided, having made this brand new blog, that I would document my reactions and thoughts as I progressed through Dragon Ball, and then Dragon Ball Z and finally Dragon Ball GT. I’ll be watching a few episodes every day and then posting a blog afterwards. It won’t be a strict review, just my thoughts. As I’ve already watched the first 36 episodes, my first post will be a summary as of what I remember of those episodes, because I’m not going to rewatch them again this soon. Then I’ll start proper, writing my thoughts of the episodes I watch per sitting (usually four). First, I’ll provide some background on the franchise below for those not familiar with it.
‘Dragon Ball’ watch – my thoughts and reactions – Introduction

Hands down, my favourite anime of ALL time is without doubt Dragon Ball Z. I grew up on that anime and I watched every single episode from its first up to some point around the Majin Buu Saga and the Fusion Saga (after which point for reasons I can’t remember, I stopped). I can’t remember exactly how old I was, but I think it’s safe to say it would be more than ten years ago (Wikipedia says that DBZ‘s last two arcs [the aforementioned ones] were first broadcast in English 2002-3. This would be the US airdate, so presumably the UK airdate would be some time after).
Dragon Ball is a Japanese magna series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. There were 42 volumes of this magna, whic hwere adapted into two anime series – Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which were broadcast in Japan in 1986 to 1996. A sequal anime, set after and not based on the events of the magna, was also broadcast, called Dragon Ball GT. Eighteen animated feature films were also developed, but all but one of these were adaptations of the anime and did not fit into its continuity (for example the first film was an adaptation of the first part of Dragon Ball). The media franchise has also expanded to cover films, collectible trading card games and a large number of video games. Since its release, the franchise has become one of the most succesful magnas and animes of all time. In particular, Dragon Ball Z is highly popular in various countries and is responsible for boosting the popularity of Japanese animation in Western culture.
So with that introduction, look out for my next post which will be my thoughts and reaction to Dragon Ball: Emperor Pilaf Saga.
