And we’re back! Season 2 of Discovery! I am very ill right now so we’re gonna dig right in, after the season 1 cliffhanger of the Enterprise appearing. It’ll be interesting to see, in the context of the actual series, how the show manages to incorporate the old aesthetic of The Original Series with Discovery‘s modern look.
The show starts with a recap of the first season, ending with the Enterprise appearance. Burnham gives a soliloquy on how ‘we have always looked to the stars, to discovered who we are’ – surmising the main theme of identity in the first season. We flashback to Burnham’s childhood with Sarek, as he brings Burnham home for the first time to meet Amanda, and a young Spock.
Spooooooooooock |
Sarek tells Spock to be friends with Burnham in a very clinical way, to which Spock slams the door on them and we cut back to the Discovery where the crew is trying to determine what is wrong with the Enterprise. Tilly bursts in being adorable as per. Tilly suggests using morse code, which I guess is a good idea but is there nothing more rudimentary than modern comms but more advanced than morse? There’s a giggly moments where Staments and the rest of the crew talk about how advanced the Enterprise is. Sarek and Burnham comment about not expecting to see Spock again.
OPENING TITLES
A visor wearing transporter chief transports over Pike, an engineer and a science officer who is not Spock. There’s a brief comment on the new uniforms as they explain the signals they are investigating.
Tilly helps transfer the command codes over whilst being super adorable again. I love her so much.
Pike briefs the crew on the signals they are investigating while reassuring everyone he is not Lorca.
Tilly and Staments share a beautiful moment where Staments tells Tilly he’s leaving his research and Discovery, to move on from Culbert. We also see a flashback of Amanda reading to Burnham Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Sarek enters her quarters in the present, where they discuss Spock. Sarek explains he had hoped Spock would learn empathy from Burnham, but fears he never accepted Burnham.
The Discovery drops out of warp into an area of what appears to be sharp rocks, but no red things. The ship detects a crashed Starfleet ship, and Burnham offers a way to get down there. Tilly asks Burnham to bring back samples of the asteroid as they are causing a reaction with the spores, and then asks Burnham to lie to her and promise she will definitely come back, as she can’t lose her and Staments. Awwww Tilly :'(
Pike, his two officers and Burnham leave in four EV pods to land on the surface. The crew share pre-launch banter which I love and set off. The science officer decides to be arrogant and ignores orders and so obviously he dies. Debris from his ship damages Pike’s pod, and naturally he can’t eject. Burnham ejects from her pod and catches Pike when Discovery manually ejects him, and they land on the asteroid.
They arrive at the ship, where they are met by a drone. A woman’s voice beckons them to follow them. They arrive in a medbay, where they meet Commander Reno, who is performing … brain surgery? Pike tells her that the war is over. Reno has been keeping the critically ill alive for ten months. The crew work to evacuate the crew. The crew mostly evacuates but Burnham is knocked back by an explosion and left behind (dramatic!),
She comes too soon after, impaled on a boiling hot piece of metal, screaming in pain. While there she sees a vague red winged finger approach her (convenient) – who turns into Pike. He beams them out but a blue rock (looks like a stone from Metabellis III) she is holding doesn’t beam out with her. This reveals a lot of scientific revelations that excite both Tilly and Burnham. She leaves to capture an asteroid, walking past a crewman in a wheelchair (wooooo represent!!!!). Staments comes to help with. Pike returns command to Pike as they chase down the asteroid. The asteroid is caught inside the shuttle bay.
Enterprise is out of action, so Pike is given command of Discovery. Burnham asks to go see Spock on the Enterprise, Pike tells her Spock took a leave of absence. He says the crew were upset on being ordered to stay away from the War whilst on their 5 year mission. Burnham asks to go on board, to check Spock’s quarters, which Pike agrees to. We get a cute smashcut as Burnham visits the Enterprise. It has a weird red colour scheme which I don’t particularly recognise, but Spock’s quarters look more familiar. She accesses Spock’s log, where he recounts nightmares he had as a child that have returned. Burnham access 3D drawings he had made that show the red signals. The voice doesn’t sound particularly Spocky in the way that Nimoy or Quinto’s did.
